There have been very few sports organizations that seem to place themselves in positions that make their fans happy. Today, a decision the NHL made quite some time ago, manifested into something special. Luck, a large stage, and superior talent has more than likely added to the fan-ship of the league.

For the very first time, millions of Americans (including myself) got a chance to witness what is to be appreciated about the often maligned sport of hockey. The gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada was a masterpiece and a joy to watch. Those who didn't know what "icing" was (when a player shoots the puck passed both red lines), as well as the other seemingly foreign rules ignored them to watch a game played with passion and intensity.

This game, thankfully, included the best players in the world, all of which play in the NHL. the NHL decided to shut down its offices to allow their players to play and represent their respective countries. Thank You NHL! You got it right where so many organizations have not. You put the game first where so many leagues have failed to do so. For this instance you pass with flying colors (A+). So lets see how the rest of the sports did:

I hope to write more someday about how I see following sports as a more socially accepted and passive version of dungeons and dragons. But for now, since this is my first post, I'm simply going to dive in and assume you think the same way as I do. That this is an absurd assumption is not lost on me, but it's also entirely fitting.

Watching the Warriors this year has slipped past frustrating and landed squarely on largely pointless. There is Nelson's meaningless quest for the all time lead in wins, an achievement that will mean very little to any season ticket holders. There is the maturation of Stephen Curry and Anthony Randolph, two players for whom the future is bright and hazy all at once. A sort of blurry version of the sun, perhaps. We expect magnificence because we have seen it before but there are no guarantees. The lone plot line keeping me interested is the development of Monta Ellis.

Anybody who watches NASCAR will agree that change for the number 88 crew is long overdue.  They have proved it time and time again Dale Jr and Tony Eury Jr go together about as well as oil and water.  Mr Hendrick did well to replace him.  Dale Jr is a great driver however the point has been proven time and time again a great driver is only mediocre if his Crew chief is a moron.  Look at past champs Johnson and Stewart, without their crew chiefs they would have finished in the top 12 but not as champs.  Now only time will tell if the change can help Jr make a run at the chase or if it will only lead to another disappointing season.  Only one thing is certain right now the number 88 team can only improve.

How come when the Ump screws up or bumps a player they are not ejected.  While watching the Cubs play the Pirates the home plate ump was arguing with Carlos Zambrano.  During the argument the umpire got to close to Zambrano and Carlos brushed him off with his elbow.  The umpire then ejected Zambrano for bumping him.  Are you kidding me!!!  Who holds the umpire accountable in this case the player was attempting to move the umpire who was clearly in the wrong.  All individuals on the field should be held to the same code of conduct.  I can only hope that the league will do something to remedy this issue.

As OTA's and minicamps progress while training camp begin to roll over the horizon, America's favorite sport nears its regular season.  While nobody knows how well teams will do in a season with the randomness of injuries and several other factors, it's always interesting to look ahead at the schedule and prognosticate.  Unlike most people, I'm not going to give just a win or loss for each game, rather I'm going to predict how many times the Steelers would win if they played a team 10 times.  For instance if the Steelers were playing a very crappy team, I would say 9/10 or 10/10.  At the end i will add up the wins and divide by 10, giving us how many wins they will have this season.

Week 1 Titans at Steelers

A great season opener with two teams that have plenty of history as well as new found bad blood.  The Titans are coming off a very disappointing post-season last year after earning the best regular season record last year.  While the Titans should still be a good team, they are losing quite possibly the most dominating DT in the game, Albert Haynesworth.  Unfortunately when the Titans "stomped" the Steelers last season, Haynesworth didn't play either, so no real gain there.  The big question will be Kerry Collins, and I think his arm will just about fall off.  I'll give the Steelers 6/10.

During the 2008-2009 season, an encouraging pattern appeared.  The Steelers would start the game well, at some point fall behind, and in the 4th quarter, Big Ben would engineer a game winning drive.  This phenomena reared its head during the regular season, but in the biggest game of the year, Super Bowl XLIII.  Why is the leader of such a sub par offense (22nd in the league during the regular season) the engineer of so many come from behind wins? When examined, two major reasons can be found.

The biggest reason can be seen when you look at the common strategy of teams who have a lead late in the 4th quarter.  Teams always want to milk the clock by running the ball.  What do the steelers do best?  They stop the run. This gives Ben plenty of chances to have a game winning drive at the end of the quarter.  While having a chance is always nice, a clutch quarterback still needs to make the plays to win the game.  So why did the 17th ranked passing offense always seem to come through?  Ben's mastery of the no-huddle offense.
