Raiders defeat 49ers

The Oakland Raiders defeated the San Francisco 49ers Friday night at Oakland 18 - 6.  Everyone was waiting to see JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden, and each played a brief time in the Raiders first exhibition game.  Russell play less than anticipated.  In previous press releases Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin stated that it was possible that Russell could play into the second half; however, he started the game and only played two series completing 2 of 5 passes for 13 yards.  Russell was also sacked once.  McFadden played a bit longer and gained 48 yards on 12 carries.

Russell should get more playing time as the pre-season progresses.  Due to his limited playing time last season, he needs all the game experience he can handle.  For McFadden it should get easier.  The rookie running back admitted following the game that he was nervous when he first entered the game, but that went away after being hit for the first time.  Besides, playing running back is a little different than being a "rookie" quarterback in the NFL.

The running back I was curious about was Michael Bush.  From all the comments coming out of the Raiders camp, Bush seemed the most excited about actually playing and having contact for the first time.  Bush carried the ball 8 time for 27 yards and a touchdown.  Everyone is very excited about McFadden, but Michael Bush may be the sleeper in this crowded backfield.

The Raiders also had a pleasant surprise with undrafted rookie Louis Rankin gaining 91 yards on the ground.  Rankin needs to continue to perform well in the pre-season in order to make the team.  Overall the Raiders had 248 rushing yards and averaged about 6 yards per carry.

Final Comments:  Remember this was against the 49ers - not the best defense in the NFL.  This is a start and the Raiders need to continue to run the ball well.  That will give JaMarcus Russell time to ease into the quarterback position.  It will also mean teams will not be able to tee off on the Raiders offensive line.

 More to come next week.
